Design and function

Choice of material

Our plastic pallets are made of HDPE (high-density polyethylene), which is often used in recycling systems such as the Swedish system for returnable bottles.

Dimensions

The DACA pallet matches the standard dimensions for an EUR pallet, 800 x 1200 mm, and is 145 mm high.

Durable and light

The present design of the DACA pallet has evolved gradually and the design goals have been achieved with the help of a team of expert engineers. The design and materials used in the plastic pallet allow the weight to be kept down without losing rigidity or strength, to satisfy the requirements for static (4000 kg) and dynamic (1000 kg) loads. The weight of the pallet is constant – always 14 kg whatever the weather – unlike wooden pallets which can weigh anything up to 35 kg.

Space-saving and efficient

Too much transport is wasted carrying empty EUR pallets. Our plastic pallets have been designed with runners and a space-saving construction which means that fewer pallet positions are needed for returns. They can be stacked 32 pallets high, which is twice as many as normal wooden pallets which are usually stacked 16 high. This provides for a more efficient flow of empty pallets and a reduced impact on the environment.

Design rights

The DACA pallet is a registered design, entered in the design register at the Swedish Patent and Registration Office (PRV) on 31 July 1996. The rights were renewed on 31 August 2009.

History of the loading pallet

You can literally track the loading pallet from the Roman Empire to the present day, along with the size of the sugar lumps we put in our coffee. It appears that the first great railway builder, George Stephenson, took his lead from old Roman cart tracks when he set the gauge of the first railways at 1435 millimetres. This then became the standard for most railways around the world, and also determined the size of the wagons.

From strife to standard

When loading pallets were developed in the USA during the Second World War, they were designed to fit railway wagons, to make for efficient transport to the combat troops. The dimensions of European pallets were standardised after the war at 120 x 80 cm. That is also why most trucks are now 2.6 m wide, to accommodate two pallets side by side. In 1957 the European Railway Agency set out to regulate the use of pallets between Member States, and the EUR pallet was defined. The Member States agreed on a standard and a control system for consistent good quality. Users can either pay for EUR pallets or return the same number as they received. This standardisation and exchange system made it possible to build whole transportation and logistics systems based on pallets. Now we are taking the next step. We are certain that there are big profits to be made from enhancing the most widely used load-bearing/packaging system in Swedish and European goods distribution – the EUR pallet.

A sweet story

But what was that about sugar lumps? Well, the reason why the Swedish sugar manufacturer Svenska Sockerbolaget changed the size from square to rectangular sugar lumps was to make transport more efficient. They wanted to maximise the load on each pallet so the sugar lumps had to fit the dimensions of the pallet. Logistics in action.
